graduation weekend in santa barbara

Two weekends ago we celebrated the most recent Westmont alumnus in my family.

Pride is an understatement when it comes to describing how I feel about Kelsey graduating. I love the mess out of that girl and for a zillion reasons that I don't know how to articulate. I've realized as I've gotten older how much I treasure my two younger sisters as friends as well as role models -- birth order not really seeming as indicative of who is the wisest/most knowledgeable about things. Kelsey has become like an older sister to me over the years and I am so proud of what she has done at Westmont: the friendships she has made, the people she has touched with her smile and laugh, and the positivity and kindness that guides the way she lives her life.

And I sat next to Libby, my youngest sister, as we watched Kelsey graduate. And I'm so proud of her too -- making it through her first year of college and the friends she made, the choir she joined, the dorm life she participated in, the major she has embraced and taken on as her own, and the ways she is becoming independent and more confident.
I came away from the weekend thankful for two of the biggest gifts in my life -- my sisters. Words don't do justice to what the two of them mean to me.

Congrats to you, Kbakes!

summer according to my iphone

I'm still trying to figure out the beginning and ending points of summer since now school isn't in the picture. In terms of weather, summer is still here, but Libby is off to school next week and Kelsey the next, so in a way "summer" in school terms is ending...so I guess it's an appropriate time for a blog post reflecting on summer 2013.

My summer highlights include: my work's softball team (we played Thursday nights at Elings Park -- so. much. fun), family vacays to Washington and Lake Arrowhead, and beginning to play soccer Sunday nights on the Westside.

Here are some pics to document!

post-running with the padre.

Trip to Washington! Perfect way to begin? BERRIES GALORE. We were in heaven with all those delicious raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries.

Visiting with Grandma -- Dad even wore an apron. It was very cute.
Aaron's wedding! Here the cousins are -- just missing Kels. The wedding was BEAUTIFUL. One of the highlights was the long days of sunlight ..sun doesn't go down until like 9:30! The wedding was in a beautiful chapel and the reception was outside and there were lawn games, delicious BBQ dinner and lawn games, and pie too!
It was a highlight to be with my dad's family and I treasured time with my uncles, aunts, grandmas, cousins, and cousin's baby!

Stephie is getting married! My cousin is getting married in October and we had a fun time going down to Orange County one weekend to help in celebrating the soon-to-be Mrs. Mertz!
And my other cousins, Andrea and Scott, are home from Cambodia, with their adorable son Zachary in tow! He's pretty fun to hang out with
Lake Arrowhead: we celebrated Grandpa's birthday in style with a week in the mountains. I'm so thankful for good vacation benefits and was able to take the whole week off. We enjoyed swimming, jacuzzi time, reading, sleeping in, good food (too much of it!), and just being together. And, I didn't wear make-up for a whole week! That's definitely a highlight on my list :)

And Kelsey came home. The Baker girls are back together again. I guess I'm the only one who's excited about it.

season of summers

an important chapter of life has ended: school summer vacation. summer is always here (as long as the climate changes don't go too crazy), but i will (hopefully!) be employed sometime soon and that job will most likely not have 3 months of vacation time. boo.

(summer '10 - ghiradelli in san fran)
 (summer '09 - libby's 8th grade graduation)
(summer '09 - hanging out with grandma and photobooth)
(summer '10 - summers were incomplete without some dog sitting - here's one of my canine friends henri)
(summer '10 - hanging at the grandparents' ...with mac of course)
(summer '11 - mammoth family vacation)
(summer '10 - dad hoping his height and our kbakes sign will help find kels after her HS graduation ceremony. i have never been so thankful for a tall father than during ceremonies like these where there are at least 2,000 people wandering a football field looking for 1 out of 450 graduates all wearing the same clothing)
(summer '11 - cousin reunion :))
(summer '09 - reunion with the grimes in arkansas!)
(summer '11 - making key lime pie for grandma's birthday --
with uncle alan cheering me on :))
(summer '12 - walk on singing beach with lyss)
(summer '12 - beach day with bekah)
(summer '12 - my 1st new england 4th of july! - with sam adams o' course!)

as i'm in the process of looking for work, i am reminded of the blessings of this past summer and the summers before that. each summer God has been faithful to provide both money as well as time with family and friends. i remember going back to Gordon for my junior year and feeling refreshed physically (yay for summer gym memberships!), spiritually (loved the church Bible study on the book of David), mentally (no papers to turn in! no Con Law briefs to write! No tests to study for! = decreased stress levels), and emotionally (cheers to laughing with my sisters and hanging with my family all summer long). that was the summer of '10, and summer '11 was different, but still so good - time with family and friends to process my time in Latin America, full-time work at the retirement center which i loved, vacationing with the family in the mountains, and doing spinning classes for exercise with some crazy athletic trainers.

this summer was different, but still wonderful. i confess i watched more TV than i would like to admit (netflix is a blessing and a curse) and at times was a bit lonely living by myself in a dorm, but i loved being in new england during the summer months, running to singing beach and exploring Boston during the warm summer evenings, laying out at west beach with dunkin' donuts iced coffee and a book in my hand, shopping at the outlets, and coffee dates with friends and co-workers. i read some good books and blog posts, learned more about managing a budget, and relished mcdonald's rolo mcflurries and $1 iced coffee (i think i have mentioned those two delicacies a few times already. i apologize. it's just THAT good). i felt like relationships with friends were strengthened and that i could rest

while i'm sad that this chapter of school-break-summer seasons is over, i am grateful for the rest and rejuvenation i have experienced during those late-may, june, july, and august months. i hope i'll find that same sort of rejuvenation and rest in these new seasons of life.

to tanya girl

why would you write a blog post about a dog? well, i already did write one a year ago. but as i sit here asking myself that question (with tears in my eyes), i guess anyone who's ever had a dog (or mayyybe a cat, but that's a stretch), will know why. it's because they're special and have their own spot in your family tree; it's because they have driven you crazy and made you laugh and scream. it's because under that fur is a personality that you've come to love and cherish.

that's who tanya has been for me and my family. and that's why losing her is hard because it reminds me of the past twelve years of growing up and all the laughter and joy we've shared with that fur covered marshmallow.

[let's go to the beach, beach, let's go get a wave]

i have been infuriated with that dog. she's the one that has broken neighbors' lamps and jumped on house guests and eaten pieces of chocolate cake and run down the street when you're already 10 minutes late for a doctor's appointment. she's the one that disallowed me from bunny or hamster sitting because she would pant outside my door, jumping to get into my room and chase the rabbit - and potentially kill it. she's the one who chased down birds on the beach and got one in her mouth who had to be rescued and brought to an animal shelter. she's the one who got a pet chicken in her mouth while i was roller blading and i had to chase her, screaming at the top of my lungs to DROP THE BIRD so she wouldn't kill it (thankfully she didn't. but i never went roller blading with her again). and perhaps the most difficult for my mom was her love for chasing skunks -- usually at about 10 pm much to the parents' dismay.

but she's also the dog that makes you laugh. she loves to garden with my mom and sticks her grey nose into the dirt and gets the look of excitement when she finds a lizard. she pounces on the gophers we caught during the summer and sleeps 23 hours of the day. she's the christmas morning entertainment and gets a bone in her stocking and happily chews it while we open presents. she's the one who would secretly eat a muffin and then whine at the door waiting for you to see that she did something very bad as a sort of sign of repentance. she's the dog that waits patiently while you cut your apple since she knows she'll get the core and she can smell you pealing an orange from the other side of the house and will politely beg for a slice. she licks our peanut butter jars clean and enjoys my mom's plain yogurt containers; she chews on our corn cobs and enjoys watermelon rinds too. she has no sense of modesty and lays flat on her back, only to be awakened when she starts to sneeze.
[christmas morning = bone chewing time]

tanya carries so many memories for me. i remember the way she made precious isaac giggle when she licked his face. i remember when we bought her as a puppy and i taught her how to sit. i also remember when we put her in her pen and she kept whining and i cried because i hated hearing that sound. i remember when we thought we would name her taffy, but decided after three days that we needed a different name. i remember taking her to lake san antonio with our church friends and how she would swim with us in the water. i remember when she threw up all over my shoes on christmas when we were driving to grandpa and grandma's and ever since how the three of us would argue about who would have to sit in the back (and we would all panic when she would get restless and start to make noises: MOM SHE'S GONNA BARF! WHATDOIDO?!?). i remember how much she loves my grandpa and grandma's backyard and how she eats too many avocados and always makes herself sick. i remember days at the beach and how much tanya loves the water and getting sandy and laying out in the sun.

and puppy training. OH PUPPY TRAINING. those are priceless memories. our family could have been featured on a sit-com with tanya who completely failed every part of that evening class. we didn't know where she was half the time because she would just wander off and she never took much interest in learning basic commands besides "sit".

her favorite position
[tanz, melis, and isaac]

she's a funny one, that tanya girl. we've nicknamed her all sorts of things from "tanz" to "d-dog" to "beast of the wildies" (that one definitely was created by my father).

each person in my family has a different relationship with that dog: libs and i have always been the more practical/responsible pet owners: tanya may not have any food from the table, nor may she get onto our beds.
kelsey is the fun one: of course tanya can eat food from the table, cuddle with me on the bed or couch (despite my attempts to tell her otherwise)
tanya and my mom are like two peas in a pod. she follows my mom around like a shadow -- gardening, in the bathroom while she curls her hair, in her bedroom for a mid-day slumber, in the kitchen while mom is making dinner (which drives mom CRAZY)-- everywhere and anywhere, tanz is by her side. gardening is her favorite outing, but she is perfectly content anywhere else. they're the perfect team for gopher hunting and enjoy liesurely strolls every night after dinner (short walks, that is -- tanya has never been able to make it very far. just far enough to sniff around).
and dad. my dad is the first one up in the morning and the first one in bed too, so they have a special little routine where he gets her breakfast in the morning and takes her out at night. he doesn't like to give her a treat by hand because he freaks out that tanya will accidentally bite his hand. thus ensues arguments around 10:30 pm between all of us about how gentle tanya is and "dad you NEED to stop freaking out that she's going to bite your hand!"

we got tanya when i was 10, kels was 8 and libs was only 5. now i'm 22 and a lot has changed within those 12 years. i went through junior high and high school and college and braces and cross country meets and youth group and family vacations and prom and summer camp and long nights of homework. over the course of 10 years we had "tanya schedules" rotating poop pick up and dog walking and dog washing between the three of us (full disclosure: mom picked up our slack all the time so we can't take too much credit). we would each (usually sort of reluctantly) wash her out in the backyard with oatmeal shampoo and she would shake with soapy water and run around the yard before she was done (sometimes in the dirt) and we would run around yelling at her to come back (but like i said before: puppy training was a failure. so asking her to "come" when you're holding a hose and an angry scowl was definitely not a successful endeavor).

saying good bye to her is sad because it reminds me of so many things she was a part of - and how thankful i am that she was always there each time i walked through my front door no matter how many times i left. she's been an important part of our family - always on the floor while we watch movies on a saturday night, always excited to see us when we pick her up after we're on vacation, always panting when it's hot outside, and always wanting to be pet whenever we're sitting in the living room. we've all pulled her along the street when she doesn't want to walk and we've all had our fair share of searching for her down the neighborhood and receiving phone calls from random neighbors "yes, hello, i think we have your dog. is her name tanya? we live right down the street and she's in our yard"

yep, we say...that is definitely our dog. and you know what? we love her for it.

i'm gonna miss that crazy, funny, lazy, beautiful, sweet, sweet dog. i'm gonna miss her a lot.

just some sister wedding dreaming

this weekend was filled with everything wedding. and through it all i felt a mix of nostalgia and excitement as i think about my sister's weddings - some day in the future. i thought about what it will be like to put on a foofy white dress, how i'll cry as i watch my dad walk libby and kelsey down the ailse, what i'll write in my toast to my sisters, how beautiful my mom will look as she helps us get ready, which songs i will make sure we dance to, what i'll say to my dad before he walks me down the aisle, what i'll say to my sisters before they say "i do". i can't wait to see kels's eyes sparkle and libby's smile shine against her freckles as they see whoever it is at the end of the aisle. i am eager to meet whoever it is that will be the source of months of stories and dating adventures and long phone calls and midnight heart-to-hearts. i am excited to meet a new addition to our family - someone who will adore my sisters for the unique and special persons that they are.

i miss these girls like crazy this summer. i miss the way they laugh and make me laugh. i miss the way they smile and annoy each other and bother my parents. i miss our dance parties when we're supposed to be washing dishes and our drives to get frozen yogurt after dinner. i miss going to bed before them and listening to them getting ready in the bathroom and [rudely] awakening me while i drift off to sleep. i miss the way kelsey's room is always a mess and libby's alarm has to go off 5 times before she makes her entrance into the kitchen in the morning.

i'm so grateful God gave me two beautiful sisters. and i hope and dream that one day i'll be a part of their special wedding day.

but until then, we've got lots of living and laughing and learning to do together -- and that is something to be grateful for.

summer [is]

growing up, summer meant no school.

i remember putting whipped cream on my desk in the second grade to celebrate that summer was (finally!) here. every year at the beginning of school summer would seem like such a distant reality, but somehow june always came back.

summer meant going to the neighbor's house with no shoes, the rough cement under your tanned feet, picking plums and peaches and apricots off of neighbors' trees and mom making a hundred batches of apricot spread because of the neighbors' bounty.

my sisters and i would wake up in the morning and watch the brady bunch and get smart. we'd pile on to mom and dad's bed and watch on their little white TV the beloved TV land station and then begin our day. maxwell smart was the perfect breakfast buddy.

we'd go to soccer camp and eat popsicles for snack break and at the end of the week we always got a blender's (split between two people of course). when we were little, we would take swimming lessons and then we got old enough to finally go on the high dive and learn how to do sumersaults under water.  we'd spend so much time in the water that our feet got pruny and our eyes a little blood shot from the chlorine.

dad came home around six thirty.

sometimes we were already outside, but i remember the excitement (i still feel it) of seeing his car pull in the driveway. he usually sits there for a few minutes -- finishing a phone conversation or listening to whatever the NPR newscaster is saying. and then he would get out and get his briefcase from the trunk and give us a big hug and come in for dinner.

dinner -- sometimes on the patio, when it got too hot and we wanted to be outside. watermelon and corn on the cob. so much corn in the summer. my favorite.

summer reminds me of bathing suits. i've come to despise bathing suit shopping, but when i was younger, i knew the drill well: 2 bathing suits for the summer. usually one of those two was a one-piece and the other a two piece. one was specifically for the ocean and was okay for tar. after a day at the beach, mom would sometimes have to get a whole bottle of oil or goo-gone to rub the tar off the bottoms of our feet. the boogie boards would lay out in the grass and we'd spray off the sand and fight with each other for who called the shower first.

the ocean wasn't usually too cold for me. i like to think of myself as a sort of "otter" during elementary school because i had an extra layer of cushion/padding/extra pounds that worked to keep me fairly warm. my skinnier friends would shiver in the ocean and i would say "it's not so bad!" we would boogie board and eventually try surfing. i remember the taste of getting salty water up my nose and the pressure of a wave as you dunk your head under the water.

sprinklers. slip n' slides.

we did those well. we would giggle loud and mom would strategically move the sprinklers or the swimming pool to the different parts of the lawn. one side was always greener than the other.

bass lake. the sisters and i slept in two queen size beds and had a rotation for who slept where. libby was always covered in mosquito bites in the morning and kelsey usually took the longest to fall asleep and would make me laugh before bed. i'd get up in the morning and see mom, reading her Bible on the swiniging chair with her coffee and dad, with water or iced tea, reading his Bible or cutting a grapefruit. i always look forward to their hugs in the morning and cuddling up next to them like a little kid as i'm still trying to wake up. i hope i'm never too old for that.

we'd go grocery shopping for the vacation week and stop at the candy aisle and put all these random pieces of candy into plastic bags and the flavors would sort of clash and not taste good anymore. but it didn't matter because we were staring at 200 flavors of candy and we could choose whatever we wanted. dad would put zingers in the cart, mom would roll her eyes. we'd pick out a berry cobbler and i would suggest rice pudding. and then kelsey would eat it secretly and say that since no one was eating it, she had every right to. i would yell and we would bicker. but the bickering always stops because she makes me laugh so hard i can't keep a straight face long enough to really fight.

my favorite part about those summer vacations was the late afternoon after a long hike or a day on the dock. we'd be showered - and a little sunburned and tired looking, but we'd look simple and clean and sun kissed and eat our dinner outside and drink juice squeeze and listen to the crickets and smell the pine trees. then we'd play card games or read a book or watch a movie.

we would go hiking. i would always dread it, but once we were on the trail it was an adventure. we would swat mosquitos and layer on sunscreen and request frequent snack breaks of trail mix and granola bars. and for lunch, if we were lucky, we would reach a pool of water and dare each other to go swim in it. we would leave the maps for mom and dad to figure out and provide constant entertainment along the hike - usually making fun of each other and laughing loud enough to scare off the other hikers.

in the summer i could always tell when kelsey was tired. her eyes would get a little pink and the skin right under her eyes would get slightly burned. she would insist that she wasn't tired, but i knew she wanted to close her eyes so bad. libby's hair turns a bit more red with the summer sun...sometimes i would call her my little "marigold".

on summer days, we would sit out by the pool. dad would immediately ask for the sunscreen once we would find our place to set up camp. i always hated when he would try to put sunscreen on my ears...i insisted i wouldn't get burned there but i was proved wrong. mom and kelsey would acquire beautiful tans and dad would get random pink spots on his toes or on his head and libby's freckles would get even cuter. i would monitor my sun intake by alternating between laying out and sitting in the shade (with periodic swimming breaks to cool off).

every summer morning was with mom. we'd annoy her and watch her get ready in the morning -- she'd be curling her hair with the TV on and we'd be laying in her bed. then she'd have her breakfast -- usually a yogurt and banana. she'd tell us to get ready and we would do so, very reluctantly leaving her heavenly bed.

i've never spent a summer away from home before...so living here in massachusetts during the months of june, july, and august feels weird and lonely at times. but i'm grateful for the experience and the adventure -- but more grateful for the memories and stories of all the summers i've shared before with the most wonderful sisters and parents in the world.

i miss costa rica

when i got back to the u.s. of a. i bought skype minutes on my computer so i could call my host family. i remember this nervous feeling before i dialed the numbers on that little phone pad staring at me on the screen.

i've called my family a few times since i've been back for a year and our conversations usually sound really similar

rrrrrriiiinnnnngggg

mami: HAAAALO? (like "hello" but accent the "a" ..it's funny how Costa Ricans don't answer the phone in the spanish "hola", but with "hello" in a spanish accent)

me: hola mami! soy alísa

mami: Alíííííííísa! Cómo está?

and then we proceed to talk about things i'm doing - like school and work. and they ask me how my family is. and then papi usually gets on the phone.

papi: Alisa cómo está? in that sweet voice that carries with it so many laughs and jokes that we shared. when i hear it i get the biggest smile on my face. papi will then usually tell me where he and mami are -- perhaps visiting some family members in a beautiful part of the country...

one day (one day soon i hope) i'll go back to costa rica.

i'll visit mami in the galería and i'll sit in that rocking chair that sits in the far right corner where i remember trying so hard not to cry during my first day in san josé

one day soon i'll be at Bible study on a Wednesday night and we'll eat sandwiches for dinner at 10 pm and drink agua dulce and i'll smile at Tío Fran who just preached with as much gusto for a small living room full of people as someone does at a huge Bible conference.

maybe one day soon papi will drive me along the streets leading up to our house -- and he'll drive really slow because he'll be talking about special Costa Rica stories and plants and landmarks and more things he wants me to see (mira alísa, mira, mira// look alyssa, look)

maybe one day soon i'll listen to cows mooing as i fall asleep ...and taste the deliciousness of food fried in canola oil and black beans and good meat and rice (always cooked with red pepper, onion, garlic, and oil). and i'll make the coffee for the morning and i'll make sure to get papi's special sugar on the shelf next to the refrigerator and mami will put more milk in her coffee than the coffee itself. i'll eat crackers with my special jam (jelea de piña -- pineapple jelly) and i'll take my lunch from the kitchen counter and head out the door.

i miss it all. but maybe, just for now, i'll sit here in my bed on a massachusetts summer evening and simply be grateful for latin america and remember as much as i can.

in NYC

baker clan (party of 5)
+ grandpa
+ pouring rain
+ crumpled city maps
+ bus tour with dave as our guide
+ a bazillion gagillion people roaming the city streets
=
NYC MAYHEM
we had an awesome time in the city, but it was ca-razy.

ready for the adventure. notice who is seatbelted?? oh dad...

waiting for our boat tour...ponchos & rain jackets were a must
 statue of liberty!
 walking down wall street
the stock exchange. kels may frame this one for her business professors
9/11 Memorial: this was really cool, but unfortunately the museum was closed for construction ...we'll have to come back to check that out.
 TIMES SQUARE
this place practically set me over the edge (so many people + being hungry + not knowing where we were going = not my cup o' tea) BUT it was pretty cool and when your grandfather who is about 4x your age is not complaining throughout the ENTIRE day, you know you have to keep a positive attitude!!
next time we'll get libs to a broadway show!

all in all, the trip was really fun and we enjoyed seeing a different city, taking the metro around town, and seeing a place that is so often filmed and talked about, but so foreign to west coasters!
